Halsey Tribble’s Heavy-Duty Lathe Stand

Halsey Tribble writes: This is a bench that I built for my lathe. It is made mostly of oak. The bottom compartment is for adding weight, and it contains over 300 pounds of lead, cast iron, and sand. In addition, I bolted a 70-pound piece of lead directly under the head stock.The combined weight of the lathe and the stand is nearly 700 pounds. It's very solid and even with out-of-balance loads there is no movement or vibration in the stand. The view at right shows the project before I enclosed the ends and added sliding front doors, while the completed stand is shown below.
