Do you remember the Layton
Store? It was owned and operated by George and Bess Willey. Their
children are, L-R: Paul, Leida, Raymond (held by George), Harriet
(on Bess’s lap) and Olive. This photo was taken in about 1910. |

George was usually behind
the counter, on the job. Once in a while, though, he could be seen
on the counter, napping between customers. Below: Tending
the coal stove. |

Peggy Gardner Laughery
writes:
“My mother (Vera Vance) found this photo in an old trunk. Her
Father/Grandfather are in this picture, but I have no idea who else
is in the picture, or the date. Maybe someone who lived in Layton
can help us...” Update, December, 2004: A Mr. Thorne writes:
“I have this identical picture. The photo was taken in 1912
and my grandfather, Thomas Fred Thorne,is sitting behind the small drum with
sticks in hand. My grandfather was born 2/7/1881 in Barren Run, Pa. and married
Lucy Kate Fuller from Layton. Her birthdate was 7/18/1882 and they both died
in 1971. I received this photo from my father, Thomas Fred Thorne Jr. who was
born 5/25/1912 in Layton. No other names are listed on my copy of the photo.” |
