The Dedication of the Dr. Harry R. Sampey Park • July 29, 2000

A Remarkable Gift to Perryopolis • A Remarkable Transformation

Left: The Frazier High School Band. Right: Several Hundred People Braved Damp Weather to Attend the Dedication

OK, I was wrong about the food. I said (only to myself, thankfully) “There won’t be enough food to feed this crowd.” I was so wrong! There was enough delicious food -- thanks to volunteers of the Heritage Society -- to feed the crowd twice over. In fact, much of the crowd was fed twice over.

A friend who was unable to attend asked “Were those as good as they looked?” I answered “No, they were even better!”

The pavilion seats 200 people at 25 large picnic tables. Even with every table full and people on additional folding chairs, the event did not feel crowded.

Above: The new bandstand, behind the Pavilion, is at the bottom of a gentle rise that will provide perfect blanket seating. Right: Star Junction was there! Betty Karpel, who is too modest to say what a dynamic role she has played in community affairs, was one of many Star Junction people who attended.

Whitsett, too, was represented. This is Leon Johnson, who takes justifiable pride in his community. Leon, I won’t forget your promise to help put Whitsett on Perryopolis.com, This is your site, too!
