Clockwise: A Blue Jay, a female Cardinal, and the ubiquitous Mr. Crow. The female cardinal often plays second fiddle to the gaudy male, but she is a beautiful bird. She is also easier to photograph, as she is less nervous. Here she has a sunflower seed in her beak.

Above and right: Two views of a Flicker. He is a type of woodpecker, but he would just as soon eat sunflower seeds off the ground or from a feeder as peck at the bark of trees for insects. I had earlier misidentified this fellow as a yellow-bellied woodpecker.

Above and right: the male cardinal, who refused to pose against the snow.

It’s a bird, it’s a... whoops! This photo was taken on December 5, 2002, during the first snow of the season in Gambrills, Maryland.
